Unibio and BioVerde partner to advance methane-to-chemicals platform targeting low-cost, low-carbon butadiene production

Collaboration combines Unibio’s patented U-Loop® reactor technology with BioVerde’s microbial engineering and downstream chemical conversion platforms to enable scalable methane-based manufacturing of key chemical intermediates.

Copenhagen, Denmark: Unibio A/S, a Danish leader in gas fermentation technology, and BioVerde Tech LLC., a U.S.-based biotechnology company focused on sustainable chemical production, today announced a strategic collaboration to develop new biomanufacturing processes for the production of sustainable chemicals.

Under the agreement, BioVerde will utilize Unibio’s proprietary U-Loop® vertical loop gas fermentation technology platform together with BioVerde’s genetically engineered strains of Methylococcus capsulatus. The collaboration aims to convert methane into a range of value-added chemical products through advanced microbial fermentation. Initial development efforts will focus on intermediates relevant to the synthetic rubber value chain, including pathways toward bio-based butadiene, a key building block used in both synthetic rubber and engineering plastics such as ABS.

By combining Unibio’s proven, high-efficiency fermentation reactor design with BioVerde’s metabolic engineering capabilities, the partners intend to develop scalable processes capable of producing specialty chemicals, intermediates, and other bio-based products with significantly lower environmental impact compared with conventional petrochemical production.

The companies will initially focus on process development across laboratory, demonstration, and pilot scales to systematically de-risk scale-up, with the goal of enabling commercial-scale manufacturing facilities.

Together, the companies aim to demonstrate a new generation of gas-based biomanufacturing processes that can transform methane into sustainable chemical products.

Innovation Fund Denmark invests in advanced Danish gas fermentation platform with global potential

Innovation Fund Denmark is investing DKK 24.6 million (EUR 3.3 million) in a new Danish research project that will convert industrial waste gases into valuable low-carbon products at scale. The project aims to establish a national platform for continuous gas-based biomanufacturing and strengthen Denmark’s global position in industrial biotechnology.

The initiative addresses one of the key bottlenecks in the green transition: the lack of efficient, scalable infrastructure for converting CO₂ and other industrial gases into sustainable products. The Gas2X research and innovation project is designed to address this challenge.

The new gas fermentation platform will be installed at Unibio’s Innovation Centre in Kalundborg, where the company’s U-Loop® technology is used to convert methane into sustainable protein.

By using Unibio’s advanced U-Loop® bioreactor technology, the project partners will develop a continuous gas fermentation pilot platform specifically designed for gaseous substrates. The goal is to create a more energy-efficient and scalable alternative to conventional fermentation systems, which are typically poorly suited to gas-based production.

The potential of gas fermentation is enormous, but the lack of scalable solutions has been a major barrier. With this project, we are taking an important step toward making biobased production from waste gases an industrial reality,” says Jens Dynesen, CSO, at Unibio A/S.

From waste gas to sustainable products

The new platform will enable the conversion of CO₂, CO, H₂ and methane into low-carbon chemicals and materials. It will serve both as a process development facility for companies working with gas fermentation and as a Carbon Capture and Utilisation test site for industries seeking to valorise their waste gas streams.

The project responds to the urgent need for technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from hard-to-abate sectors that continue to rely heavily on fossil carbon. These industries account for a significant share of global emissions and are central to achieving Danish and international climate ambitions.

Efficient technology with a lower climate footprint

During the project, the partners will optimise mass transfer, reactor design and continuous operation to demonstrate high productivity with low energy consumption. Unibio’s superior vertical loop bioreactor is expected to deliver significantly improved gas-to-liquid transfer and greater flexibility across different gas sources compared with existing technologies.

As a result, the project is expected to support national climate ambitions through new Carbon Capture and Utilization solutions, accelerate industrial decarbonization, and create new opportunities for growth, exports and global technological leadership.

The project is a collaboration between Unibio A/S and Again and is funded by Innovation Fund Denmark.

Southeast Asian ambassadors visit Unibio in Kalundborg to explore fermentation technology

We were privileged to host the Ambassadors of Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam to Denmark, together with members of their staff, at our Innovation Centre in Kalundborg.

The programme focused on their interest in our innovative fermentation technology and the related commercial opportunities, followed by a guided tour of our pilot plant.

We were delighted by the strong engagement around our unique single-cell protein production and our U-Loop® vertical loop bioreactor system.

The Saudi Industrial Investment Group and Unibio to build the world’s largest single-cell protein plant in Saudi Arabia

Copenhagen/Riyadh: The Saudi Industrial Investment Group (“SIIG”), a prominent investor/operator in the chemical industry in Saudi Arabia, and Unibio International PLC (“Unibio”), a leading biofermentation company, will build the world’s largest single-cell protein plant in Saudi Arabia in an 80:20 (SIIG:Unibio) joint venture to feed the world's growing population and improve food security.

Unibio welcomed SIIG as an investor in 2023. Since then, the partners have made significant progress preparing to build the world’s largest single-cell protein plant in Saudi Arabia based on Unibio’s patented vertical loop bioreactor technology. With its abundance of natural gas, Saudi Arabia is an ideal location to use Unibio’s unique fermentation technology to produce single-cell protein – Uniprotein® - with natural gas as feedstock. As part of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, Saudi Arabia is looking to diversify its economy and create dynamic opportunities for its citizens through education, entrepreneurship and innovation. Unibio’s transformational technology and SIIG’s strategic aspirations mark a significant milestone by bringing the most sophisticated industrial fermentation to the Kingdom.

The plant will be located in Al Jubail and will produce an initial 50,000 tonnes of Uniprotein® annually with plans to increase to over 300,000 tonnes in the coming years. The plant aims to reduce Saudi Arabia’s dependency on animal feed imports. The Uniprotein® produced is expected to be sold both domestically and internationally.

Gas turned into feed

The plant will use Unibio’s proprietary vertical loop bioreactor technology, a continuous-flow fermentation process that replicates nature in converting methane into Uniprotein®, a high-quality and sustainable single-cell protein for animal feed.

Uniprotein® has been tested successfully in various animal species. Non-GMO, free from pesticides, and fully traceable, it is approved for aquaculture in Saudi Arabia, for feed in the EU and has additional registrations globally.

The front-end engineering design (FEED) was completed last year, and construction of the plant is anticipated to commence in the second half of 2026, with commercialisation expected to start in 2028. This facility will be the largest single-cell protein facility ever built in the world. A gas allocation for the plant has been received from Saudi Ministry of Energy, and a site has been nominated by the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu. The project has also received strong support from a number of related Saudi Government entities.

The Joint Venture agreement follows a US$ 70 million investment in Unibio from SIIG in 2023. SIIG’s strategy to grow and diversify its business – will be accelerated by its investment in Unibio.

Unibio ranked among top presenters at Tech Tour Bio-based Industries 2025

Unibio was named one of the top presenters at the Tech Tour Bio-based Industries 2025 event. The event took place on 13 November in Wuppertal, Germany, where 38 companies out of 150 applicants showcased advances in the bio-based economy, bringing together innovators from across the sector.

David Henstrom represented Unibio in the Agriculture and Food & Feed Products session with a five-minute pitch. Out of the 38 companies invited to participate, we were honored to be selected among the top eight presenters, recognized for delivering a sustainable, cost-effective, and scalable protein solution for the aquaculture industry.

Reflecting on the event, David shared: ‘Thrilled to have participated in this event and seeing the investor interest in our forward-thinking solution we are bringing to the market.’

The eight companies selected as Top Presenters were chosen from a field of 38 promising innovators whose solutions impressed the expert jury with their vision, sustainability impact, and potential to advance the bio-based industry.
