Unibio Becomes a Member of the Global Feed LCA Institute

Unibio, the leading sustainable protein company committed to feeding the world’s growing population, is pleased to announce that it has become a member of the Global Feed LCA Institute (“GFLI”).

GFLI is an independent animal nutrition and food industry institute with the purpose of developing a publicly available Animal Nutrition Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) database to support meaningful environmental assessment of animal nutrition products and stimulate continuous improvement of the environmental performance in the animal nutrition and food industry.

The membership supports GFLI’s commitment to monitor and improve the environmental performance of the animal nutrition industry and aligns with Unibio’s ethos – to feed the world’s growing population in a sustainable way.

Unibio’s proprietary technology – the U-Loop® uses fermentation to produce Uniprotein®. The technology mimics a process that occurs in nature every day and uses methane (e.g. natural gas or biogas) as feedstock. The production of Uniprotein® is efficient, uses little or no water and is unaffected by weather conditions that can impact the production of more traditional protein sources.

Uniprotein® is approved for feed in the European Union, it is free from pesticides, fully traceable, and non-GMO. It has been launched commercially and is attracting significant global interest from feed compound companies and animal and fish farmers.

CEO of Unibio, David Henstrom commented:
“Unibio has long been seen as a leader in the sustainable and alternative protein space. Our GFLI membership will facilitate strong and long-term relationships with those in the animal nutrition and food industry as all parties collaborate to provide credible enhancements to the world’s protein insecurity in the most sustainable manner.”

Project Manager Laura Nobel from GFLI commented:
“The GFLI is delighted to welcome Unibio, one of the first biotechnological companies to join our framework of frontrunners. The Global Feed LCA Institute represents nearly 30 members. Sustainability and finding solutions to limiting the carbon footprint of feed and food production on our planet is of paramount importance. The Institute and its database allow for pre-competitive science-based discussions and engagement with other stakeholders in the feed and food chain. By supporting the GFLI, members contribute to the resilience of the entire supply chain through an acknowledged methodology and high-quality database with an increasing number of datasets of feed ingredients.”

    About Unibio
Unibio is a leading sustainable protein company, that has developed a fermentation technology – the U-Loop® – to produce Uniprotein®, a high-quality protein. The technology which has been scaled up to an industrial scale and is being rolled out globally, uses methane, such as natural gas and biogas as feedstock. It is Unibio’s mission to become the food of the future through the provision of secure and sustainable protein for farming and fishing feed.

Unibio’s technology is highly resource efficient and sustainable. The process replicates the same process that happens every day in nature. Unibio is headquartered in Roskilde near Copenhagen in Denmark, where it also has its Research & Development centre. Unibio’s Innovation centre with a pilot and demo plant is located in Kalundborg west of Copenhagen.

    About The GFLI
The Global Feed LCA Institute (GFLI) is an independent animal nutrition and food industry institute with the purpose of developing a publicly available Feed Ingredients Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) database to support meaningful environmental assessment of animal nutrition products and stimulate continuous improvement of the environmental performance in the animal nutrition, animal production and food industry. GFLI will maintain and expand its regional and sectoral Animal Nutrition LCA database, ensuring the integrity and quality of the LCA ingredient datasets in accordance with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Livestock Environmental Assessment and
Performance Partnership (FAO/LEAP) guidelines for animal nutrition and food chain systems. The Institute facilitates access to the GFLI database, as the recognised global reference for feed ingredients LCA data by the public and private sector (LCA researchers, industry, academia and government bodies). The Institute will also facilitate GFLI database access for stakeholders in the field of animal nutrition, animal production and food industry, for use in conducting environmental footprint calculations of their products and meaningful comparisons based on a harmonised methodology.

    About U-Loop® technology
Unibio’s patented U-Loop® technology uses a continuous-flow fermentation process to mimic a process that occurs in nature every day and uses gases, including methane to produce Uniprotein®. Through its proprietary process, microbes grow with methane as feedstock, and they are turned into single-cell protein – Uniprotein® that is subsequently treated and purified to a nutritious, high-quality feed grade. Unibio owns the intellectual property rights to the U-Loop® technology.

    About Uniprotein®
Uniprotein® is a high-quality and sustainable protein on par with other high-quality proteins such as fishmeal and soy protein. The amino acid profile for Uniprotein® is very close to fishmeal. Uniprotein® has been approved for feed for terrestrial and aquatic animals in the EU and registrations globally are in progress. Uniprotein® has a high uniform quality, is free from pesticides, is fully traceable, and is non-GMO. The product has been introduced commercially drawing significant interest from customers from all over the world. The product is in development for direct human consumption.
Uniprotein® – a superior protein product known for:
    • single cell protein approved for animal and fish feed in the EU
    • a high protein content – above 70% in dry matter
